Tweak announcement: VisualEditor performance improvements

Hey everybody!

New update about an upcoming feature that you will see next Wednesday in our wikis:

Tweak: VisualEditor performance improvements

Launching: March 6, 2024

Premise: We believe that a faster-loading editor will make editing more appealing to new and experienced editors, leading to an increased success rate in the editor, and a higher number of editors overall.

Data: The User Generated Content team experimented with loading the VisualEditor before accessing it. During the experiment, the VisualEditor was preloading when users were hovering the top right edit button and other edit entries. It was limited to the users using the VE as predefined editor.

In this experiment, we saw around 4% increase in the number of editors completing an edit…

Responsive Theming and CSS Coloring: The Basics

Hellou there. I'm Mark.

In this blog post, I'll show you how to make your wiki be adaptable to any kind of theme that it might be on, and even making it less frustrating to design it. Color is everything for a wiki's design, branding, and image, so you should pay extra care to it.

When you open up ThemeDesigner for the first time, you'll notice that there are two tabs for both the light and dark theme. This is incredibly useful to set unique and different coloring for each theme of the wiki, especially if you know what you're doing.

However, you'll be soon quick to realize that this only affects things and elements that Fandom has designed to use, not your templates, decorations, or boxes (there's so many boxes...). What do you do now? Fix it…

Black History Month With Fandom!

Hey Stars! 🤎

As you may or may not know, January has came to an end. With this, that means it my favorite time of the year; Black History Month! In the past, Fandom has showed TREMENDOUS amounts of love to all of us in the black community, and I have no doubt in my mind that they won't do something this month to celebrate! In honor of this month, I'd like to share some facts about the notable Black people around the world. 🫶🏾🫶🏾

1: Did you know that Ruby Bridges was the first African American women to attend a white-only school? Here's some more info on her; "On November 14, 1960, at the age of six, Ruby Bridges changed history and became the first African American child to integrate an all-white elementary school in the South." That's phenom…

Experimentation Announcement: Simplified editor for first-time editors

Hey everybody!

We are going to run a new experiment on the platform:

Experiment Name: Simplified editor for first-time editors

Test Launch: Wednesday, Nov 29, 2023

Test Closes: One Week

Will Be Tested On: 50% of the editors opening the Visual Editor

Hypothesis: We believe that providing first-time editors with a far simpler, more familiar editor interface will enable more of them to successfully publish their first edit, increasing the number of new editors per month.

Other Notes: We are moving/hiding any non-essential elements of the 2017 Visual Editor (the default editor for newly registered users), and increasing the editor’s similarity to other text editors users are familiar with (like Microsoft Word or Google Docs). To do this, we have analyzed …

Tweak announcement: Adding a View Image link

Hello all!

I am bringing a new update for an update to images anonymous users will start seeing next week:

Tweak: Add a View Image link to access gallery for mobile & desktop for anon users

Launching: Currently in development, but we are looking to go live on Wednesday

Premise: We are adding a View Image link under images to lead anon users to the gallery. We experimented with the idea that creating a visual entry points for anon users would increase understanding that images are clickable. We tested a few different options, such as adding an icon on the image itself, and found that the View Image link underneath the image created the most understanding without being intrusive to the image.

Data: In the experiment mentioned above, we saw a 5.6% in…

Tweak announcement: Redesign of the highlight menu for logged-in users

Hey everybody!

New update about an upcoming feature that you will see tomorrow in our wikis:

Tweak: Redesign of the highlight menu for logged-in users

Launching: [Updated] Nov 29, 2023

Premise: We will redesign the highlight menu based on the results of the last experiment. This will help to see more searches from our users, facilitating the discoverability of our content, and also will add a new edit entry point from this menu.

Data: We added a highlight menu in the content area with options to search for specific pieces of content some months ago. This resulted in an increase in the number of searches, and proved to be an excellent way to address our readers to key tools as the editor.

In a previous experiment, we saw an increase in search activity…

Experimentation Announcement: Referenced Links

Hey all,

First, I'm excited to say you’re going to be seeing a lot more of these posts in the coming weeks. As we review 2023 and heading into 2024, your Community staff is focusing on how we can better and more effectively serve information to you. We'll share a bit more in coming weeks, but what you need to know today is: We're committed to better, broader communication of product changes to the entire community. And we're also committed to using this Stars group to drive early, direct, and actionable feedback into various parts of the product process.

To that end, today I'm writing to talk to you about a forthcoming experiment. An experiment is not a full-fledged feature. It is an idea we are testing on the network, measuring the results,…

Managing large amounts of files on your wiki

Not everyone needs to work with large amounts of files, but when it's needed, it can be a huge headache. In this blog, I've collected every upload, rename, deletion and some other mass-managing files methods. Mainly images, as it's the most common type of files, however, almost all of the methods are applicable to any other file formats too.

Before you start doing anything with large amounts of files, make sure that:

  1. You're using a bot account. Make a separate account, mark it as a bot account on its user page and what software you plan to use, and then ask for a bot flag from your wiki representative or technical support. Bot flag hides contributions made by this account from Recent Changes page, module and some other places by default. You…

Disability Pride Month: The Impact on those with Disabilities

Ah yes, another month dedicated to something special. And this month is Disability Pride Month. What is it you may ask? It's a month where we focus on the awareness of those with disabilities to feel accepted and welcomed. Not only that, but also fostering a environment of acceptance and involvement.

  • 1 How this benefits the disabled community
  • 2 Why make a blog about this?
  • 3 What we can do to raise awareness
  • 4 Moving forward

In our average world, many of those who have disabilities (both mental and physical) are often looked down upon and stereotyped for their conditions. Because of this, a lot of their skills and talents are often overlooked and pushed aside. But just because you have problems doesn't me you're not human. It has been proven that by…

Getting the most out of Special:Community

I've always been a big fan of Special:Community, a page available under the EXPLORE tab of the top navigation in all non-Gamepedia wikis. While the main page of each wiki acts as a hub for the wiki readers, the community page was designed to be the hub for the editors. By default, the page offers several features useful specifically for editors, such as links to the most active admins' user pages, lists of editors, and cards with editing suggestions such as pages to proofread.

While a great starting point, the default qualities of this page don't account for the specific needs of individual wikis and the page is hard to find, resulting in rare utilization of the page. I'm going to go over what can be done about this, using Rebel Moon Wiki a…

The state of tracking page stats

Hello, everyone! It's a blog about the Fandom platform!

  • 1 What we would love to see
  • 2 Why even care?
  • 3 What has Fandom said about this already?
  • 4 So this is an angry rant? 🤬
  • 5 One sentence TL;DR

This blog is just meant to draw attention to the fact that on Fandom, you cannot check the individual views that any page has received. Currently, each Fandom wiki generates a report (seemingly daily) of the pageviews that each individual page has received across the entire site. The platform is generating and storing this data somewhere within each site. Unfortunately, no tools have been developed to allow users (admins or otherwise) to view what those individual page views are for any given page.

The only pages which a user can see the page views of are the to…

Meta Template - A Wiki's Dangerous Core Engine

On many wikis, users (readers and editors alike) tend to find themselves going through non-infobox data tables. They tend to be uniform, contain the same kind of information, with difference being data on the individual object itself. These could as well be called "Meta Templates".

With their mass usage, Meta Templates are double-edged swords. Used correctly, and the wiki will look very neat and appealing for users. However, several bad practices around them will cause problem for everyone.

  • 1 What constitute Meta Template
  • 2 Beneficial Effects
    • 2.1 Content Format Uniform
    • 2.2 Follow-up Utilizations
  • 3 Adverse Effects
    • 3.1 User Error
    • 3.2 Content Misrepresentation
  • 4 Editor Effort Balancing
  • 5 Example
    • 5.1 CardTable

NOTE: The definition of "Meta Template" here is complet…

Maintaining good relations within the administration and with the community

Hello everyone!

After presenting the different ways of appointing new members to the administration, today I'm going to present how to maintain and preserve good relations both within the administrative team and with the community. This is obvious to some, I'm sure, but it's still possible these days to see administrations fracture or wikis struggle because of communication problems.

  • 1 Being a good listener
  • 2 Be correct, friendly and welcoming
  • 3 Boosting communication
  • 4 Conclusion
  • 5 Note

The first and most important point for any administrative member is to listen and pay attention to other users. First of all, for your team. The best way of avoiding problems is quite simply to avoid creating them! To avoid creating them, you need to listen carefully …

Infobox Styling Advanced Guide

Do you know how to make infoboxes? If not, then you should check our other guide about how to build an infobox from 0 level! If you already know how, have ever you seen another wiki and thought that "this infobox on that wiki is so cool, it has round edges and different colors, I want mine to be like that, too"? Today we are going to dive into some more advanced techniques related to infoboxes.

First of all, there are 2 things you should know when you try to style your PI (Portable Infobox): how to write more code inside the template itself and how to style it in MediaWiki:Common.css. Therefore there is an important note: beautifying infoboxes can only be done in CSS and that requires admin rights on your wiki.

Apart from the usual , , (3%);

Accessibility, the wiki, and you

To begin, I’m not an expert on accessibility in any way. But I do care about it, and I consider accessibility to be one of the core goals that must be considered in any public project.

  • 1 Why accessibility?
  • 2 Accessibility and the ’net
  • 3 Visual considerations
  • 4 Further reading
  • 5 Notes

Here are some examples of accessibility features that can be found in everyday life:

  • A wide door with automatic or semi-automatic opener and a low step. Great for wheelchair users, parents with strollers, or just someone carrying lots of luggage onto the bus.
  • Automatic voice announcements on upcoming stops for the bus or train. Great for blind people, new visitors, or when it’s dark outside.
  • Well-structured information. Great for people with cognitive issues or people who a…

The Fandom Creator Class is in Session: Learn More About The Workshops & Program

Hello Fandom Stars!

At Community Connect 2023, I announced the launch of initiatives we’re kicking off this summer. These initiatives focused on three pillars for the year: mentorship, monitoring, and creator class. The Fandom Stars program was launched in 2022 to support our most dedicated community members to grow their personal and professional development, serve as leaders on the platform, and provide one-of-a-kind fan opportunities. One year later, the Creator Class is the next iteration of Fandom Stars as Fandom continues to invest in your development, creator tools, and more. As the program grows, we want to extend various opportunities to engage and amplify Stars. I’m excited to share Fandom Star’s Creator Class and how you can part…

A Reconsideration of the Navbox as a Portable and Modular Infobox, or the Navinfobox Blog

Practical navigation is not a fully solved problem yet on wikis, and likely never will be. It is also a hugely important topic, as evidenced by that no less than three out of the ten Best Practices blog posts directly concerned navigation in various forms: The best possible local navigation bar, Categories and Navigation on Fandom, and Organized spaces on Fandom. It was also discussed in the Main Pages on Fandom blog.

  • 1 Linking solutions
    • 1.1 Inline links
    • 1.2 Navboxes
    • 1.3 Navigation bar
    • 1.4 Lists
    • 1.5 Addendum
  • 2 Final thoughts
  • 3 Notes

Note that all of these solutions can be used independently of each other and complement each other.

Inline links, that is, links that appear in the running text of the page, are arguably the most important links, and are probabl…

How to compose your administrative team

You are a bureaucrat and you are looking for new members for your admin team but unfortunately, you have no idea how to go about choosing them.

Well, you've come to the right place, I'll (try to) explain it all to you!

We'll start by identifying the needs of the community; if this appointment will be useful, how to make it more relevant; how to identify the most suitable candidates to help you with the special pages; and finally, how to appoint them.

Notes:

  1. Obviously, I say "you" throughout the blog but it’s the administrative team I’m talking about. Let everyone work and spot candidates, debate, etc. It’s up to all of you to choose, not one.
  2. If you don't feel like reading, I suggest you read the sections “To sum up”, located at the end of each…

Dealing with toxicity and drama

  • 1 Introduction
  • 2 What is toxicity?
  • 3 Do not engage into it
  • 4 Do not retaliate
  • 5 Work things out
  • 6 Take a break when needed
  • 7 Conclusion

Hey reader!

Now and again, wikis do face toxicity and drama within their communities, which can often lead to drama happening. As someone who had been a victim of a toxicity and an attack by users for an opinion I had, and also, as someone who started off as toxic when first joining Fandom at a younger age, I am going to give four tips on dealing with toxicity on wikis.

Toxicity is defined as harmful communication on a community, whether it is harassment of a user, trolling in discussions, or creation of negative posts. It can usually lead to drama on communities.

The first tip, is simply, do not engage in the toxicity. Wh…

Style Guides Should Be Guides

This is a continuation of my earlier article Write Text, Make Links, discussing how a style guide or manual of style fits into a wiki as a collaborative and ongoing venture. It is not a finished example that can be adapted to an individual wiki, rather an attempt to provide tools to reason about and evaluate a style guide, and how to decide what to include.

Note: You might see different terms used on different wikis, like Manual of Style, Style Guide, Layout Guide, or something else. I use the term style guide here, but as used here there is no real conceptual difference between the terms.

  • 1 Rules versus guides
  • 2 A style guide is explored
  • 3 Standardisation
  • 4 Documentation
  • 5 Prescription
  • 6 Good writing cannot be standardised
  • 7 Examples

Wiki rules and style…

Without going too deep into it, it is safe to say that some people on Dev Wiki have written scripts to parse information from your Discord server and display it on your wiki. You do not have to understand what Javascript and APIs are, all you have to do is create a couple of new pages on your wiki, copy and paste a few words there, and it is settled.

NOTE: only wiki admins are allowed to edit the MediaWiki space, therefore only admins can set up a Discord Widget!

Reflect and Refresh: Fandom Stars in 2023

Hey everyone!

Happy New Year! Last year, we announced the launch of the new creator recognition program Fandom Stars. Crafting this program was fun, and it was fantastic to see people share their experiences as editors on the platform and serve as ambassadors to the community. In such a short amount of time, we accomplished quite a bit. Stars had the opportunity to attend conferences for the first time, meet showrunners and talent from their favorite IPs, amplify their voice while telling their stories on the Fandom platform, win a few giveaways, and provide feedback directly to our product team. Stars might not realize it, but they’ve contributed so much to the success of this program. They set the tone for the future of Fandom’s creator p…

Some thoughts on typography

Typography is the art and craft of presenting the written word to best convey the message of the text. It combines concerns about usability and readability with stylistic and aesthetic choices.

  • 1 Introduction
  • 2 The rules of typography
  • 3 Design or typography
  • 4 Technical skills
  • 5 The style on fandom.com

    • 6.5 Inknut Antiqua

  • 8 Notes

This text came out of the re-design that I did recently for a literary-oriented wiki. Since it was about an author and their books, I wanted to have a wiki that reflected that better than fandom.com’s default style. To some degree I had already done so by using typographical dashes, quote marks, and apostrophes, but what I really wanted…

All of the red words mentioned above are considered ParserFunctions that have very specific usage. To put it simply, those are special words inside special symbols that perform magic outside Hogwarts. Calling them on a page requires putting them inside

HammerOfThor: Can you give us a brief introduction of yourself and the wikis that you are active on.

Minnichi: Well, as per my very classic introduction, my username is Minnichi on Avatar Wiki, my home base, and I'm the editor-in-chief of the community newsletter The Ba Sing Se Times, which I rule over and have absolute say on when to publish. I am also an enthusiast of community activities in general, I like to …

How to Edit on Fandom

Are you a new editor who has just joined and has no idea what to do? Or are you an older editor who does not feel comfortable with switching between the Visual Editor and Source Editor? Or maybe you have always used only VE (the Visual Editor) and you keep hearing from more experienced Fandom members that SE (the Source Editor) is a blessing? Here is how you can learn to use both! Buckle up, Lucy is on the line!

The very basics of Fandom

So, you are new here, you feel scared and excited but also clueless about how everything works. Let us start from the beginning.

What do we do here on Fandom?

Our main task, as editors, is to provide content for readers in the most easily accessible way. Simply speaking: you write, they read. We have a big num…

Dealing with negativity on social media

When operating on any social media platform, you will inevitably encounter negativity. Over this blog, I will share my personal experiences in dealing with it, how to identify it, and what the best response you can have towards it is in various scenarios.

  • 1 What is negativity on social media?
  • 2 What is baiting, and how do you respond to it?
  • 3 What do you do if someone is constantly trolling your posts?
  • 4 Oh no, a controversy happened on your wiki, and social media picked up on it
  • 5 When should you turn off commenting?
  • 6 Someone on social media is demanding you unblock them, or otherwise telling you what to do.
  • 7 The worst has happened, someone tried doxxing a user.

To start, let's take a look at what constitutes negativity on social media. With any IP, t…

New Ad Concept Preview - Sponsored Global Nav Icon

Hello Stars!

I wanted to share with you a mock up of something that we’re going to be testing this week, as a new type of ad that doesn’t add another traditional advertisement to wiki pages. This time, it’s a test of a sponsored icon in the global nav.

We know that there’s a lot of frustration with ads on Fandom. FanCentral, if the beta is successful, could become a key step in helping reduce some of those issues by having different types of advertisements in a feed. In the meantime, though, we of course need to continue growing the Fandom business but we don’t want to just shove another banner ad onto the page or anything like that. So, we’ve started to think about what newer, less intrusive, and much more seamless advertising opportunities…

Infoboxes Guide

Oh, the scary word 'infobox' that everyone seems to be using when you have no clue what it is! How do we create, style and use infoboxes? Tldr: it's not easy. Expanded explanation: keep reading further, Lucy is on the line!

  • 1 Building
    • 1.1 What is an infobox?
    • 1.2 Types of infoboxes
    • 1.3 Portable Infobox: Infobox builder
    • 1.4 Portable Infobox: How do I understand what is going on?
      • 1.4.1 Weird symbols

Yes, that is exactly what you have seen on all these cool fancy wikis! Infoboxes are rectangles located on the right side of a page that contain brief information about a character, an item, a game and so on. They are meant to give a gist of the topic without going into details and provide the most basic factual data. They usually include the name, a picture and…

Templates newbie guide

Have you ever seen the word 'Template' but never understood what it meant? Or someone told you 'create a template page' and you had no clue? This guide is for you to figure things out! Lucy is on the line, buckle up.

What are templates?

Templates are a special way to store data on your wiki. It is a way to tell Fandom 'hey, can you please keep all this huge scary code for me here, and I will decide what to do with it later?' You create a big and spooky layout once, and next time you need it, you won't have to write it all over again, Fandom will remember it for you.

How do I create a template page?

A template page is created the same way as any other page on your wiki. You can press 'Add new page' on the drop-down menu on top, or you can type…

General Editing Guide

This is time to talk about advanced wiki editing. Have you ever thought about doing more than what Fandom offers by default?

The answer to this question is quite simple: source editing is the plain html markup with no pre-designed tools (except for some life-saving mediawiki symbols). The amount of customization possibilities it provides is just enormous, therefore using the visual editor instead strips you of all custom colors, layouts, sizes and more. The source editor is your best friend when it comes to editing a wiki.

To make your life easier, enable syntax highlighting in your source editor. This feature makes your code colorful which lets you distinguish between html tags vs. plain text vs. templates vs. tables. For that you need to f…

Write Text, Make Links

It can be a daunting task to write a new page. Even more so to start a new wiki from scratch or reviving a dead wiki. This is a rather personal view of how to go about it, grounded in the idea that wikis should be collaborative and ongoing ventures. It is not necessarily the end-all and be-all for building a wiki, but it is hopefully a reasonable way to go about it. If nothing else, I hope it will help the reader to create their own approach to building up a wiki.

  • 1 Write text
  • 2 Make links
  • 3 Build in a spiral
  • 4 The value of imperfect pages
  • 5 One object, one page
  • 6 Less is more
  • 7 Style guides should be guides

Wikis are a textual medium. Images, videos, and sounds have their place and can play great roles, but they are all supplementary to the text. Text i…

Wiki sites and Social Media - Why Brand Awareness matters

Hello everyone, and welcome to the first entry in my blog series about wiki sites and social media. Over these blogs, I aim to share some of the knowledge I've gained by managing social media accounts for Wookieepedia and hopefully give you ideas on how to take your social game to the next level. This first one will dive into brand awareness, so let's get started!

When creating and managing your wiki social media accounts, something you want to keep in mind is brand awareness. Brand awareness is, put simply, consumer awareness of your brand (in this case your wiki). Whether it be Star Wars, Minecraft, Attack on Titan or any wiki at all, brand awareness is a key aspect of your social media accounts. Take Wookieepedia for example. The name is…

Feature Suggestion: Open Theme Editor

The theme editor is a fantastic tool for admins to control the aesthetic of their wikis, but being an admin and being a graphic designer are two separate things, and as it stands admins have to be the ones to deal with it either way.

I'm not suggesting editors have access to editing the wiki theme. Rather, what I'm suggesting is setting up a separate namespace for wiki themes and allowing editors to use the theme editor to create their own, just as the interactive maps system works.

  • Admins would not need to force themselves to set up something that may or may not be within their skillset/interests.
    • Any editor could create a theme, and the admins could select any of these themes to activate across the wiki.
  • Communities could vote for their favo…

There are plenty of ways to contribute and I want to ensure there’s space and opportunity for everyone to share. Here are a few ways you can get started on the Stars Wiki and what you can expect to see!
